I hope you will R.I.P.

This to me is one of the kindest things one can wish on another. The words “Rest In Peace” form one of the most powerful phrases in our world. It’s a pity we wait until someone dies to utter and mean them.

What does it mean, really… for someone to rest in peace? To rest, to be in peace… what does it mean really?

In this context, I’d like to say that to rest is to find stillness. To not be agitated. I interpret the word rest as enlightenment. I say that because to be still doesn’t necessarily mean to not move. But rather… to move with purpose and complete awareness.

We all know that making any movement in this world of ours means friction. The sages have once said that you cannot take a step without trampling the ground. Ram Das puts it so beautifully - this Divine Dichotomy; “You shouldn’t act until you are enlightened, but at the same time, you can’t wait until you’re enlightened to act”.

With that in mind… to be at rest is to move in such a way that isn’t out of anxiety or fear. To move like the wind in an open field. To move like a raindrop descending from a cloud. Rest is knowing that you are in the world but not of it, and that you will one day return to the beautiful place from which you came. It is to go through the cycles of life in completion without forgetting that you are the Universe.

Rest is living fully in this life without being changed in essence. It’s being still… still naive, still joyful, still compassionate, and still full of love every moment of your life.

Now, that last part… in peace… I don’t know what it is. If I admit it, I am hardly at peace in my own daily life. There are many things that demand my attention, and I am responsible for far more than I sometimes feel I can handle.

But, for the purpose of this conversation… I will say that, I imagine peace is like being carried. Peace is being able to fall back knowing that the shadows won’t swallow you. Peace is surrender… like how you fall asleep at night. You don’t know where you’re going, but in some way, you find comfort in knowing that it isn’t the end.

Being in peace is being in unity with yourself, and in one piece. I read once that the human experience is about remembering. Re-membering who you are, or who’s you are.

Regardless of how I interpret these words… my question remains. Why do we wait for death to come around? What do we wait until we are dressed in black for us to wish such kind and compassionate things upon each other?

I hope you will rest in peace today.

Rest In Peace
